MYTH 1:
TANTRA IS AN AGE-OLD SEXUAL PRACTICE THAT HAS ITS ORIGIN IN INDIA
Fact: The word tantra derivates from Sanskrit and it means “something that stretches” in the sense of continuity that passes through time and that has neither beginning nor end. It is a Buddhist and Hindu practice that aims to reach enlightenment. Sexuality is a representation; it is a visible expression of union between two opposites – for instance, male and females. Sexuality is understood as a spiritual expression of union between two people, since the spiritual and the sexual is not separated. In this sense, sexuality – among other aspects of human life – may be a Tantric expression. In Western countries, something known as “Tantric sex” has been developed. Although it developers allude to sacred principles and texts, they have little to do with Buddhism, Hinduism or with the spiritual dimension that form these philosophies.
MYTH 2:
ORGASMS IN TANTRIC SEX ARE SPECTACULAR AND THEY LAST HOURS.
Fact: In accordance with the authors of Great Sex Made Simple: Tantric Tips to Deepen Intimacy & Heighten Pleasure, the orgasm in Tantric sex is a mystic experience since the mind reaches stillness and as the union with another one is felt. It is understood that the feeling of transcendence goes beyond the organism itself and that it is a medium, not an end – because the main aim of Tantric sex is to establish a conscious connection with your partner, before reaching orgasm. The longest orgasm that has been ever registered – with or without Tantra – in 45 seconds.
MYTH 3:
IT IS NECESSARY TO PRACTICE YOGA AND TO BE INCREDIBLY FLEXIBLE TO PRACTICE TANTRIC SEX.
Fact: Tantric sex aims to build an emotional and conscious connection between the couple. not to do acrobatics or contortions. When the connection is established – for example, looking at each other in the eyes -, the exploration of positions is more natural, because both parts of the couple are synchronized with each other (giving and receiving).
MYTH 4:
TANTRIC SEX IS A COMPLEX AND HARD-TO-LEARN PRACTICE THAT REMOVES SEX’S SPONTANEITY.
Fact: It may be true that spontaneity is a thrilling aspect in sexual in intercourses. Excitement and variety in a long-term relationship requires imagination and creativity. Deliberate actions relating to care and demonstrations of affection to others may build a connection between both parts so that giving and receiving pleasure brings us to a deepest, extended dimension – therefore, more exciting.
MYTH 5:
TANTRIC SEX IS A PRACTICE DEVOID OF PLEASURE BECAUSE ITS MAIN AIM IS NOT ORGASM.
Fact: Although orgasm is a medium, not and end, Tantric sex aims to take advantage – through breathing and visual contact – of the sexual energy to explore diverse ways to give and receive pleasure that are not only related with orgasm, but they may be more powerful.
MYTH 6:
TANTRIC SEX ACTIVATES SEXUAL DRIVE AND ENCOURAGES PROMISCUITY.
Fact: although it has always been thought that Tantric sex justificated promiscuity, its aim is the opposite. It is not just important to reach stimulation or satisfaction but to reach a superior state of consciousness with your partner.
